How Are Absolute Oils Distilled?

Absolute oils are botanical extracts distilled from flowers, leaves, bark, or roots of plants. This highly fragrant oil can be employed in aromatherapy and perfumery applications alike.
The extraction of absolute oils differs from that of essential oils in that it involves organic solvents rather than steam distillation. First, a non-polar organic solvent is added to the raw plant material before filtering it to form what’s known as concrete — this thick paste contains more polar, fragrant compounds than what was found in its raw forms.
Distillation is the process of heating concrete to a very high temperature to extract more polar compounds from it. Unfortunately, this can result in the loss of aromatic top notes and even lead to cell death for some plants.
Supercritical fluid extraction is another popular way of obtaining absolutes, which involves several steps in a vapor-phase extraction machine. Here, liquid carbon dioxide acts as the solvent at lower temperatures than necessary for steam distillation, allowing waxes and essential oils to separate.
Other methods for obtaining absolutes include enfleurage and extraction with hexane or similar solvents. Although more laborious and costly than other techniques, these processes produce a purer product with more of an aroma.
Floral absolutes are the most aromatic of all plant-derived fragrance ingredients used in cosmetics and fragrance products. These oils come from leaves, stems, roots, and flowers of various plants such as rose absolute, jasmine absolute, lilac absolute, oakmoss absolute, bergamot absolute, lavender absolute, and mimosa absolute.
These oils are ideal for a range of aromatherapy uses. Diffused through a reed diffuser, diluted with oil in a bottle, or added to bath water can all be beneficial in providing relaxation and healing properties.
They can be quickly absorbed into the skin, so it’s essential to use them at a low concentration in order to avoid sensitization. Diluting essential oils before massaging or applying them topically also helps increase their surface area and ensure maximum absorption into the skin.
It is not advised to apply oils directly onto the eyes as this can irritate and burn sensitive eye tissue. To avoid this, dilute the oil with a suitable carrier oil. Doing so will increase its emollient properties and make it easier for your body to absorb.
Carrier oils are an integral component of many cosmetic and aromatherapy applications. Though often neglected, they play a vital role in helping to “transport” essential oils onto the skin.
The ideal carrier oils for applying to the skin are natural, nutrient-rich oils that are light and gentle on the skin. They can be used on all parts of the body and are especially helpful for sensitive or dry skin types. Massage helps improve texture and tone, reduces cellulite and stretch marks, and softens itching inflammation conditions — they even work as a natural deodorant! You may add them to soaps, lotions, and massage oils too! For more information check https://aromachologyoils.com/collections/absolute-oils.
