Let’s say you have a random external DVD drive, and you want it to play a homeburnt DVD of you being a weirdo or a store-bought Pixar film or something like that. When you insert a DVD, DVD Player should automatically launch, but what if it doesn’t?
And then you realize… macOS no longer has a DVD Player in the Applications folder… But little did you know, it actually does! It’s hidden away from the user, in a hidden folder, with a few other secret apps, tucked away by Apple in 2019. You can find it like using Spotlight Search, or like so.
Open a new Finder window, then, using ⌘⇧G (Command+Shift+G) open the “Go to Path” menu. Type the following in the box:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications
Then press Return (or Enter if you prefer its name). You should find your self in a folder with just a dozen apps (which is not exaggerated, on my macOS Sonama copy there are 11) which have pretty understandable uses, but most of which didn’t make it into the Applications folder. In other words, these apps are the underdogs of the macOS world, made yet somewhat rejected by Apple. I hope DVD Player helps, it should be relatively straight forward to use.
If you aren’t that tech savy and you don’t know how to use this app, there is a great guide available at Apple Support.
But… if you are… DVD Player has loads of features! You can change the Scan Rate, to make your DVD fly off the spinner or use the Slow Motion mode to slow down the movie.
So now, sit back and enjoy listening to some romance or urinating in your pants out of fear while intensely staring at the dramatic set of a horror.
All of this, on your Mac.
NOTE:
Unfortunately, no Blu-ray discs can be played using DVD Player.
