I am a very goal oriented person. Organization and planning have helped me feel connected to myself and achieve long term objectives that I have. I started creating vision boards a few years ago and have made it a yearly tradition to make goals for my upcoming year.

While setting goals helps me in many ways, I believe that hustle culture is insidious and that over exerting yourself to achieve goals can lead to extreme burnout (something that I experienced in full-fledge after graduating university). I think that there are healthy ways to set goals and I want to share how I do that in my own life.

Make Goals as Specific or Open-Ended as You Want

When it comes to a lot of the personal goals that I set for myself, I like to keep things more broad and open for exploration. For example, one of my goals is to write a book. Whether that is a children’s book, a book of poetry, or just a short story, I want to create something that I can hold in my hands. Keeping things open-ended like this allows me to explore what kind of ways I want to express myself and also gives me permission to stop projects that aren’t as fulfilling for me.

I do have goals that are more discrete, like my goal to get 2.5k followers on Medium. This helps fulfill my more analytical brain and gives me a concrete vision to…
