Thanks for writing this. It’s given me a new way of looking at this issue (from afar, as I do as an Englishman).

It feels like everything I’ve read or heard about it before has been about some or all of race / slavery / left vs right / Southern pride. All of which seem perfectly valid things to bring up, I should add.

I’ve just never seen it spoken of as a government vs separatist thing before, which is what has given me a new perspective on it.

It’s a perspective that makes me agree with your notion of relocating the statues to history museums. We can’t forget history because then it might be repeated, but that doesn’t mean reminders need to be in prominent public spaces.

I think it’s a perspective that can do more than lead to the relocation of statues, however. It’s a perspective that, if accepted, could encourage people to forget about how the issue divides them and consider how it means they’re actually all on the same side.
