Where it was once Manhattans and Cosmopolitans, the drink of choice for the fashion forward, young professional has become gin. However this humble spirit has been given a “craft” make over. The upswing of gin’s popularity has to do with the rise of craft gin distilleries, suddenly we have great gin of higher quality in lower volumes coming into the market and the consumer definitely appreciates it.

In South Africa, we have definitely been given a large variety of brands to choose from. MYMY has a serious crush on gin and you’d be hard pressed to find a party we’ve thrown without a fruity G&T concoction, so of course we had to compile a list of our favourite local gins for your consideration at your next soiree.

NUMBER EIGHT: Sugarbird, Cape Fynbos Gin

Sugarbird, Cape Fynbos Gin

This floral gin is distinctively crafted in Cape Town. She exudes notes of Rooibos, honeybush, rose geranium and the may flower, obtained by botanists from the Cape’s iconic mountain-Table Mountain. Great in a cocktail of lemon flavoured tonic water and round slices of grapefruit and rosemary.

SEVEN: Wilderer, Fynbos Gin

Wilderer, Fynbos Gin

This unique South African gin is carefully crafted from a special selection of fynbos botanicals, roots & spices, including wild dagga, honeybush, buchu and devil’s claw. We enjoy it with a splash of Fitch & Leedes tonic water.

SIX: Pienaar & Sons, Orient Gin

Pienaar & Sons, Orient Gin

A unique gin made from South African maize, infused with botanicals that have been carefully selected to pay homage to the Eastern spice trade that influenced Cape Town culture and cuisine alike. A refreshing, uninhibited gin packed with spice and citrus. Bold flavours that we enjoy with crushed basil and orange juice.

FIVE: Inverroche, Amber Gin

Red bush, Rooibos tea flavours emerge to taste with hints of sweet toffee apples that give way to delicate florals. The spice returns towards the end in a layered and intriguing flavour journey. Almost caramel taste that we enjoy on the rocks.

FOUR: Triple Three, Citrus Infusion Gin

Triple Three, Citrus Infusion Gin

Experience fresh and crisp citrus aromas with a smooth, silky finish. This zesty gin was enriched with hand-picked, farm grown citrus fruit. Each distilling carefully crafted to ensure a balanced gin with an abundance of citrus notes for your ultimate drinking pleasure. We love to pour this over pineapple juice and serve with frozen pineapple chunks and mints.

THREE: GINOLOGIST, Floral Gin

Ginologist, Floral Gin

An aromatic bouquet accentuated by rose geranium and orange blossom so soft and playful that it comes with a license to thrill. Perfect for a French 75 — essentially gin and champagne, how could you say no?

TWO: Musgrave, Pink Gin

Musgrave, Pink Gin

Musgrave Gin is born out of the flavours and history of Africa and its ancient spice route. Musgrave Premium is no ordinary gin and its top notes of aromatic Cardamom, African Ginger and Grains of Paradise are reminiscent of the perfume of spice markets. Don’t let the blush colour fool you, this beauty packs a punch. Great poured over crushed ice and lime juice.

ONE: Hope on Hopkins, Mediterranean Gin

Hope on Hopkins, Mediterranean Gin

Made from a triple distilled grape spirit this gin is inspired by flavours from the Mediterranean. It is infused with olives, rosemary, basil, thyme and cardamom with overriding citrus notes and hints of juniper. Of course, as our favourite gin you can drink this straight, as a classic martini or with a splash of tonic water. It goes with everything and looks good doing it.
