This is very important to receive a study place and, of course, a scholarship. Try to write this on your own, sharing your honest thoughts on how the specific study program can help you achieve your goals and advance your career. Avoid using AI text generator tools like ChatGPT and write genuinely from your own perspective. You can use a grammar checker like Grammarly if necessary. Do not use the same motivational letter for two degree programs, especially if they are from the same university. It is important to customize your letter according to each specific program. However, you can include a common paragraph to introduce yourself.

Steps

  1. Go to the program webpage of the university.
  2. Note down the keywords: course contents, specialization areas, career opportunities, etc.
  3. Check whether there are any character/word limitations provided by the university.
  4. Structure your motivational letter.
  5. Write your motivational letter.
  6. As an additional step, ask a family member or a close, trustworthy friend for feedback.

Structure

Paragraph 1 — Introduction

  • Introduce yourself.
  • Provide information about your Bachelor’s degree and GPA.
  • Mention any research publications you have

Paragraph 2 — Why this degree

  • Career (if relevant to the applying degree)
  • Discuss how your career aligns with the degree you are applying for.
  • Include a few sentences about how you have practically recognized the importance of the area of study through research or in your career.

Paragraph 3 — Future prospects and alignment

  • Explain how obtaining this degree will contribute to your future growth and development.
  • Highlight how the course contents align with your future goals.

Paragraph 4 — Reasons for choosing Finland and a particular university

  • Why Finland is your preferred destination.
  • Highlight the world rankings and reputation of the university in your chosen domain and industry.
  • Mention the facilities the university offers for learning the subjects.

Paragraph 5 — Closure

  • Summarize your motivations and aspirations.
  • Explain why you believe you are the best candidate for a scholarship.

Paragraph 2 and 3 can be combined.

Always limit the length of the letter to 1–1.5 pages. DO NOT exceed 2 pages in length.
