Do You Feel Invisible At Work?
In a male dominant corporate sphere, women tend to get overlooked for the work that they’ve accomplished and the results that they’ve achieved. Where a male colleague could easily convey his achievements and earn the rewards equivalent, women tend to struggle and be deemed invisible.
According to a survey conducted by Monster India, 62.4% women feel that their male counterparts get more promotions opportunities because of a gender bias, which is the result of being easily visible in a male driven environment.
There are a few steps that you can take to attain similar opportunities as your male colleagues and make yourself more visible at your workplace:
Volunteer:
Participation in your corporate environment is of key importance. Whether it is an off-site or team building activity or even a new project crew, volunteer, to make yourself seem more versatile and visible to your colleagues.
Network:
Maintaining a good reputation among your peers, makes an impression on your colleagues and creates a path to connect with the right mentors. If you perceive that you don’t have visibility in the organisation at the moment, it’s time you shed your inhibitions and converse with your peers over a coffee/water break or schedule a meeting on their calendar, more than a cursory hello or good morning.
Self-Promotion:
This attribute can be attained with practice and confidence. Share your results and achievements with colleagues and mentors for the projects you’ve undertaken, to make your contributions visible. Sharing your key learning over difficult situations, would elevate your position in the company.
Participation in your corporate environment, networking with your peers and promoting your achievements are a few ways that you can make yourself more visible at work. A healthy way to tackle issues of gender bias, these tips are also valid to create an online image on platforms like LinkedIn, which will help you in building a profile and a network outside of your organisation.
