Beware Of Puppy Mills

Puppy Mills — Beware of Kennel Conditions:
Just like any other “mill” where one thing or another is produced; puppy mills are commercial dog breeding facilities that operate with one primary goal in mind — and that’s making profit. They typically disregard the welfare of the dogs and are known to not provide their animals with adequate nutrition, attention, or comfortable places to live, grow, and play. Health issues, bad temperament, and hereditary diseases are common with puppies raised in puppy mills. People looking for new puppies can do several things to avoid puppy mills.

Be Informed and Ask Questions:
There are numerous pet stores that have puppies available for adoption, sometimes at a hefty fee. Observe the store conditions and ask questions related to the veterinary care provided for the puppies while in the care of the pet store. Pet stores should be able to provide proof of where the puppies were obtained. A good rule of thumb is to ask for verifiable documentation to prove that they are selling puppies from legitimate sources.

Don’t Justify or Support Puppy Mills:
People tend to justify they are doing the right thing by purchasing from a puppy mill, e.g. “I’m saving this puppy from this place that is not going to provide good care”, however always keep in mind that buying from a puppy mill will only help puppy mill owners rear more puppies. Avoid this at all cost since you could end up with a puppy that has health or temperament issues.
