Renowned actor Carl Weathers, celebrated for his roles in iconic films like Rocky and Predator, has passed away at the age of 76. His family, speaking through his agent, shared that he peacefully departed in his sleep on February 1st.

In a heartfelt statement, they expressed, “Carl was more than just an actor; he was an extraordinary soul who touched countless lives. His impact spans across film, television, the arts, and sports, resonating globally and across generations. To us, he was not only a cherished brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Weathers gained widespread recognition for portraying the memorable character Apollo Creed alongside Sylvester Stallone in the initial four Rocky movies. Additionally, his presence was felt in the Creed films, where his footage added depth to the narrative alongside Michael B Jordan.

Transitioning from a successful college football career in the 1960s to professional retirement in the early 70s, Weathers embarked on a journey into acting, initially in blaxploitation cinema with notable appearances in films like Bucktown and Friday Foster.

Reflecting on his passion for acting in a 2023 interview, Weathers remarked, “Once I stepped onto the stage, experiencing the laughter at the good lines and the applause at the end, I was hooked. It’s an infectious feeling. Once that bug bites you, it’s hard to let go.”

Carl Weathers Cause of Death

His family released a statement indicating that he passed away “peacefully in his sleep,” without disclosing the cause. Describing him as “an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life,” his family expressed their sentiments.

Weathers’ breakthrough came with his role in the 1976 classic Rocky, originally earmarked for professional boxer Ken Norton. Legend has it that his candid critique of Sylvester Stallone’s acting during his audition ultimately landed him the part. Reflecting on this serendipitous turn of events in a 2015 interview, Weathers humorously remarked, “Funny how sometimes it’s the slip-ups that seal the deal.”

In a 2020 interview, he opened up about the challenges of portraying a boxer on screen, revealing, “It was inevitable to avoid taking a few hits during filming. There were moments where we deliberately went at each other. I was always cautious, worried that a well-placed punch might inadvertently cause harm. I believe Sly felt the same way.”

Following his success in Rocky, Weathers continued to captivate audiences with roles in the subsequent three Rocky sequels, as well as alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 hit Predator and as the lead in 1988’s Action Jackson.

Sylvester Stallone, deeply affected by the news, paid tribute to Weathers, describing him as an indispensable part of his life and career. Stallone expressed his admiration on Instagram, acknowledging, “Carl Weathers was more than just a co-star; he was instrumental in my journey and success. His talent was undeniable from the moment he entered the room, and I owe him a tremendous amount. We accomplished so much together with Rocky, and I could never have done it without him. He was truly exceptional. Rest in power, and keep fighting.” Continue
