I completely agree, though like you point out there is a difference between a car and a phone.

That would be a tragedy: useless cars simply because the software is not profitable to update or the company chooses to abandon the project/device. The vagaries of car ownership mean that a consumer invests in “buying”, leasing, then learning the program, other devices that are compatible with this car (trailers, roof racks) only to find the car obsolete because company X has a new CEO new marketing plan.
