The Reality of India Vs China
The history of human edification is in itself a witness of the glories and righteousness of the two greatest civilizations — India and China. But the history of post independent India shows China not exactly in the light of friendship. Efforts were made, agreements like “Panchsheel” were signed by both the countries and slogans like “Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai” were raised, but the reality is the two countries have fought a massive war in 1962 where the Chinese won comprehensively.
Border disputes have been a common occurrence between these two Asian giants who keep on trying to gain supremacy in the global marketplace. With a new border tension in the Sikkim sector making headlines, MSMN comes up with an in depth economic and military comparison of these two nations.
Gross Domestic Product And Human Development Index — If we look into the economic scenario of both these countries, there has been a constant fight for the position of the world fastest growing major economy. In the third quarter of 2016–17, India was at the top but in the fourth quarter, China has regained the top spot with 6.9 per cent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in comparison to India’s 6.1%. If we take into account GDP per capita, then India is leading China as per the reports published in January this year. The GDP per capita in India stands at 7.6 USD while in China it is 6.9 USD. But the scenario does not look too good for India when she is compared to China in terms of Human Development Index (HDI). While China stands at 90, India occupies the 131st spot in the HDI ranking list of UNDP.
Average Age — What gives India a significant advantage in attracting more investments is the fact that apart from being the second most popular country after China, the average age of 50 per cent of the Indian population is below 25 years. Over 65 per of the population of this country is below the age of 35. In 2020, India’s average age will be 29 while for it will be 37. So, as far as work force is concerned, India is a better destination to invest.
Gold Reserve — With 557.7 tons of gold within its borders, India features at the 10th position of the ranking list of global gold reserve while which China features in the 5th position with 1797.5 tons of gold.
If we now move to the military prowess of these two countries, apparently China seems to be much more powerful than India. But in war, what matters the most is strategy and not weaponry.
Army — As far as active military personals are considered, India has 13,25,000 while for China, the number is 23,35,000. India has 21,43,000 military in reserve while China has 23,00,000. India leads China in terms of the number of armored fighting vehicles as she has at her disposal 6704. But a major difference can be spotted in terms of tanks as China with 9150 has over 2500 tanks more than India. China has 1710 self-propelled gun while in India there are only 290. China has as many as 1770 multiple rocket launch systems while India only has 292.
Airforce — India has around 800 aircrafts less than China. India has 2086 aircrafts while China has 2942. As far as helicopters are considered, India has 646 while China has 820. With 161 more serviceable airports than India, China’s count is 507.
Navy — In terms of naval power, India’s fleet strength is 295 in comparison to China’s 714. While China owns 68 submarines, India has 14. As far as aircraft carriers are concerned, India has 2 while China has only 1.
Nuclear Weapons — It is speculated that India has 110–120 nuclear warheads in its arsenal while China has 260.
