Myths about ageing finally busted!
Women are seen to have mixed opinions when it comes to leaving their prime and entering the world of old age. While some women are scared of it and take every measure possible to slow it down, some view ageing as “an adventure and opportunity”. But before you enter it, there are a few common myths which should be off of your head first!
#Myth 1: Dementia is inescapable once you age.
Fact: Dementia is a modifiable health condition. If by chance it occurs, should be treated as a medical condition, not a natural part of ageing. Forgetfulness could be related to medication, nutrition or modifiable medical issues. Don’t always assume it’s Alzheimer’s. Sometimes, Hypertension could also lead to Dementia.
#Myth 2: If you didn’t start exercising in your 20s, 30s, and 40s, it’s too late to start in your later life.
Fact: Don’t believe when you hear this! It’s never too late to start exercising or taking care of your health. You can easily start exercising in your 50s, 60s or even 70s.
#Myth 3: Sex takes a back seat with ageing.
Fact: Sex doesn’t end as you age. You just need to adjust according to the requirements of your new changed body and your partner’s. Just keep in mind that STDs don’t really discriminate anyone on basis of their age.
#Myth 4: Getting older is depressing so expect to be depressed.
Fact: Just like Dementia, Depression can be treated too. If older people could just admit it and get the help needed, they could live a much more active and fuller life. Studies have found that older people who are depressed, are more likely to develop memory and learning problems, while other research links depression to an increased risk of death from numerous age-related diseases, including Parkinson’s disease, Stroke, and Pneumonia. So it’s best to get treated before it leads to something else.
#Myth 5: Women fear ageing.
Fact: This isn’t true for all of the women. While it’s true for some women, most women are found to have a positive attitude on ageing. They take their inspirations from others who have the same positive outlooks and who stay active as they grow older.
#Myth 6: Arthritis worsens as you get older.
Fact: While Arthritis is common as you get older, thanks to the impact of time on the cushiony cartilage that prevents joints and bone from rubbing against one another. Age isn’t really a factor that causes Arthritis.
