2018 Palu Earthquake and Tsunami

That afternoon at 18.02 WITA on September 28, 2018 there was an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 shaking Palu and Donggala cities.

The epicenter was at a depth of 10 KM northeast of Donggala. The shock was even felt until Makassar which is 800 km from Palu City. As a result of the shock, the Talise Beach Bridge was broken, the Baiturrahman Green Dome Mosque, the Roa-roa Hotel, Thousands of people’s houses were destroyed and many were buried inside.

Shortly afterwards the Tsunami came with a height of about 6 meters and a speed of 800 KM / h hitting Talise beach, panic swept people around the beach, many survived after successfully reaching high places such as Palu Grand Mall. And there are still many who are unlucky to become victims due to the ferocity of the Tsunami. In some places there is also a Melting of the Soil or Likuefaksi. Such as in petobo village and Balaroa Housing Estate. The death toll was recorded at around 4340 people spread across Palu City, Sigi Regency, Donggala, and Parigi Moutong.

What Causes the Tsunami in Palu?

According to BNPB, this tsunami was caused by a landslide of sediment in the sea that reached 200–300 meters due to being shaken by an earthquake.
