The master director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Devdas is a must-watch Bollywood movie. In addition to his expansive set design, what became the talk of the town was the costume design of Chandramukhi and Paro played by Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai to perfection.

It was Abu Jani, Sandeep Khosla, and Neeta Lulla who created the heavenly costumes for both of them, making them even more stunning .18 years later, Chandramukhi and Paro are still remembered for their exquisite costumes.

Let’s take a look into the ecstatic yet elegant wardrobe of Chandramukhi and Paro: -

#MaarDaala

Chandramulkhi sings about the love she has for Devdas in this powerful sequence. Green is the chosen color for her heavily embellished Anarkali suit. She paired it with a heavy gold necklace, long dupatta, and hath phools. Needless to say, Chandramukhi looked like a favorite sonnet. Also, the unconditional love of Chandramukhi is emoted well through green color, and somewhere it also suggests that she is reborn after meeting her Dev Babu.

#DhaiShaam

The song was written and composed by Pt. Birju Maharaj while Madhuri Dixit sang along with Kavita Krishnamurthy. The maroon red-golden lehenga weighed 30 kg and was designed by Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla.Designed from gold and jadau, this maroon red-golden lehenga was evocative of the love, passion, and extravagance of Chandramukhi. The designers used heavy volumes of gold work to make this royal lehenga.

#DolaRe

Certainly, Dola Re was the highlight of this movie. Two of the greatest stars of two generations came together, and Saroj Khan, one of the greatest choreographers of our time, directed the song — so it naturally became a classic. The red-bordered white saree with gold jewelry — mangtika, bangles, earrings, necklaces, and anklets — their costumes were similar and brimmed with Bengaliness. The red aalta on their palms completed their Bengali appeal.

#SilsilaYeChahatKa

This is the entry sequence and song picturized on Paro. She donned a red saree with a blue blouse. The blouses had puffy sleeves — the fashion statement of that era shown in the movie. The long plaits of her saree and her open hair added the much-needed charm on screen.

#Thakurain

Paro is newly married to a Zamindar who lost his first wife. The Zamindar was very clear that he could not give the same place to Paro as he had given to his deceased wife, yet he promised to respect and adore Paro as a companion, as a mother to their children, and as a daughter-in-law to his mom. Paro was relieved, yet giddy at the same time. She had lost her love of life, but now she was ready to be a responsible thakurain. The blue sari symbolized her wisdom here.

#MoreyPiya

On one hand, Paro’s mom is dancing majestically in the godbharai tradition of Devdas’s sister-in-law. On the other hand, Paro and Devdas are romantically flirting with each other near a pond. Paro looked so elegant and royal in that pale purple soft linen saree.
