Why I quit my job to study, volunteer and travel.

The short answer, because I saw no other way.

Most of the people I have been speaking to told me, “I want to know your story”. Please make sure you’re able to document what you’re doing so that there can be more people like you and so that we can follow you on your adventures.

These were not ordinary people. They were the visionaries, the ones that were able to see what I was on to. Or at least I think so.

What is all the fuss about? You may be wondering.

So, here is a guy(me) — Young, energetic and doing fairly well in his Finance job at a Fortune 500 company for almost 4 years. What could have possibly prompted him to take a year off; leaving, leaving so much on the table. Leaving just when things were going his way.

Why? I don’t know? Oh, wait. I do. At least I think I do.

Let me attempt this.

  • To have no regrets (one of my biggest regrets so far is not going to college. Having said that, no, I am not uneducated)
  • To automate my money making process. Currently, if I stop working the money tap dries up. I want to create something that will make money for me and not the other way round. (Curious? Read — Rich Dad, Poor Dad)
  • To live a different life everyday and not go through the same day over and over again for 15..20 or how many ever years.
  • To see the beautiful country that is India. Learn what plagues her, try to make a difference, a dent in the universe.
  • To meet new people, get a different perspective, expand my mind and not be bogged down with schedules, deadlines and “cut offs”.
  • To figure out a little more about ourselves. What drives, motivates and makes us do what we do. (Yup, I am a Psychology nut. Interested? Watch — Crash Course Psychology)
  • To push the limits of my comfort zone. As Tony Robbins says, “The only way to survive on an island is to burn the boats.” (Who is this guy? Watch his TED Talk)
  • To listen to my heart because it does not see me having a desk job for the rest of my life. (My brain wonders where the hell I will get the money from, but we need to wait and find out)
  • To give a TED Talk in 2 years. I’ve been working for almost 4 years. I have nothing MUCH to talk about, I need to change that.

What am I doing? Where am I headed?

My last day of work will be Thursday, 8 April 2016. From 9 April till 22 July 2016, I would be studying for my ICAEW Exams. (Know more — The ICAEW) What will happen if I pass? I don’t know. Will cross that bridge when it comes.

23 July 2016 till ______________(to be decided), I would be doing a basic mountaineering course, helping replant a forest, learn sustainable agriculture, learn how to ski, work on farms, teach English and IT to people, learn how to cook and figure my self out…while doing volunteer gigs across different parts of India.

I will keep my story, no. My journey published here.

A weekly update every Saturday for the next 52 weeks. Week 1, done.

Edit — I accomplished a lot of what I set out to and also much more that I had no idea I would. To know more about where my journey took me, take some time to read these articles :)
