Requirements To Become A Security Officer

The Certificates needed for Security Guard license

One who desires to become a security officer might be well aware with training programs and his job opportunities. But he might have a slight confusion in knowing about the requirements for becoming a security officer. This is because the qualification for becoming a security officer changes from nation to nation and even provinces of some nations. So let us see in brief on 3 major certificate requirements for becoming a security guard officer in Canada.
1. Medical Fitness Certificate
2. Physical Fitness Certificate
3. Psychological Certificate

Medical Fitness Certificate

The candidate is subject to appear for a proper medical test before issuing the medical fitness certificate. This medical assessment is conducted by a dually qualified medical practitioner on vision and hearing sills. This medical fitness certificate is solely for determining the ability of the candidate whether he or she can perform the task assigned by the licensee. It is the duty of a security officer to undergo the medical assessment at least for every two years.

A medical practitioner determines the physical fitness of a candidate, appearing for the security guard license based on five major guidance,
1. A physician’s guide for the assessment of police officers.
2. Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police document titled : Constable Selection System — Guidelines for Examining Physicians — Medical Evaluation of Police Constable Applicants
3. Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police document titled : Constable Selection System: Guidelines for Examining Ophthalmologists / Optometrists
4. Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police document titled : Constable Selection System Hearing Performance Standard and
5. Other equivalent recognized guidelines for policing.

Physical Fitness Certificate

A CNSC approved NSO physical fitness test is conducted for the candidate to determine whether he is physically fit to carry out the tasks assigned by the licensee. This physical fitness test is administered by the physician recognized by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. A Security guard officer must undergo physical fitness test once in every 12 months.

Psychological Certificate

The psychological assessment for the candidates includes interviews and tests. A dually qualified psychologist will determine the assessments and their interpretations and would finally certify that the candidate is psychologically good to carry out the tasks assigned by the licensee.
These three certificates are the major factor for licensing of a candidate, which will authorize him to act as NSO. The Licensee is also responsible to make sure that any task assigned to Security Guards does not pose a risk to his or her own health or safety, the health or safety of others as well as the safety of the facility.
