You probably have two wall outlets close to the area where you need much more. Maybe because you have a TV or a desktop PC with all their accessories that need a power supply at the same time. That’s when a power-strip or a power-extender is needed. However, you want to make sure that your devices are protected against a power surge that can possibly harm them. Hence, it’s very important to make sure that the power-extender you use has a surge protection. I recently got my hands-on Anker’s new dual surge protector PowerExtend 12 strip and had a chance to try it out.

First things first what’s a difference between surge protectors and regular power strips

Power Strip is basically an expansion to your wall outlet providing you with more power outlets with a minimal level of protection. They are usually cheaper than the surge protectors.

Surge protectors on the other hand provide a level of protection against any power surges or spikes. The level of protection depends on the number of joules the device has. The higher joules, the better. That means that the device can handle one large surge or many small ones before any damage can happen to your device. That being said, you should note that surge protectors aren’t meant to be used forever because their joules wear down over time.

Back to our product; Design and build

This Anker’s surge protector offers 12 AC outlets with 6 vertical ones in the middle and 3 horizontal ones on each side. That outlay makes it very useful to to stack all those plugs and place the bigger power bricks on the sides where you have more room. There’s an on and off switch with a light indicator and underneath it there are three more lights. One showing the ground protection and two for the dual surge protectors. The encasing is made of UL-V0 flame retardant casing able to withstand temperature up to 1382 Fahrenheit offering a protection not just to your devices but also to your home.

Comes with a 6 ft long thick cable adding to its protection features. The cable is almost at a 45 degree angle to the wall plug for accessibility, not getting in the way if you need to use the other wall outlet. At the back there two mounting holes with a 7.7 in distance giving you the option if you need to hang it depending on your setup.

Having 12 AC outlets, meaning that most probably you would be connecting a lot of devices at the same time. It’s important to take in consideration how many joules are there in the surge protector because you want to protect your devices and ensure it lasts you a bit longer that usual. As mentioned earlier, this product has a dual 4000 joules surge protector that ensures proper protection. I appreciate that Anker included two light indicators for each of them. That way it can give you an indication how is your surge protector doing and when would be a good time to consider changing it. Anker are very confident in their product that they offer a lifetime warranty of $300,000 for connected devices. That means if anything should happen to your connected devices (God forbid), Anker would fix or replace them up to $300,000. Testing out this product I didn’t have a power surge and that’s when it will really put it to the test.

Pros

  • 12 AC outlets allowing you to connect multiple devices at the same time
  • The outlay of the outlets allows you to efficiently plug your devices
  • Dual Surge protector
  • High quality of encasing

Cons

  • I would have liked to see a USB-A or USB-C connection specially in a big strip like this one
  • Maybe they should offer it in black so that it would blend well with all the black cables but that’s just my personal opinion.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a power-extender that would protect your devices and need one that would take up to 12 plugs, then this one would be good pick specially with its price of almost $25. Anker also has other Power-extenders with different designs with less outlets depending on your need that are reasonably priced compared to Belkin or any competitors on the market.
