How to recognise good business.
A good business runs with the same harmonic symphony as a great summer song.
When music is beautiful, it is the result of many separate sounds layered over each other in a marriage of melodic noise. When music is bad, it is because the sounds are out of sync, and disruptive to the production of a melody.
Similarly, when we talk about businesses, there is a concept of harmony that is intrinsic to the creation of a quality product or service that people will want to return to again and again.
The creation of the noises we love and repeat is the result of careful and loving production.
When I talk to my friends, quite often we’ll agree that a great song is based on two simple points:
- The sound makes us feel good
- We like the artist
You can apply this metaphor to business and you will find yourself working with the same two points:
- The product or service makes us feel good
- We like the company
At the heart of this corporate rhapsody is a managerial composer, an artist with the know how and experience to plan and execute tasks with the precision needed to keep a business ticking. If the management lacks talent, then the result is as grindingly irritating to buy into as a bad song.
