Causes of Dandruff

Although the cause of dandruff is not fully understood, it is currently theorized that one of the main causes is the breakdown of the scalp’s natural lipid barrier, making it more susceptible to infection by microscopic yeasts commonly found on the scalp.

When yeast overgrows, it leads to an inflammatory response that kills scalp cells at a rapid rate, which in turn sloughs off in the form of stickiness and flakes.

This condition is identified by:

– White or clear flakes on the scalp, through the hair, and on clothing.

– Itchy scalp which may be red and inflamed.

Some teens find they develop dandruff when they reach puberty because their hygiene habits have not changed to meet the challenges of newly accelerated sebum production.

Stress, poor hygiene, and a poor diet can make the scalp more prone to dandruff. High-sugar foods in particular are known to exacerbate yeast infections.

Hair should be brushed regularly to loosen flakes and stimulate the blood supply to the scalp, which will speed up the natural immune response to infection.

Treating Damage

There are some habits you can develop and natural treatments you can use to treat dandruff.

Nutrition: Excess sugar in the diet can make yeast infections worse. Try reducing your intake of all refined sugars and starches when treating dandruff.

Cleansing: Massage your scalp thoroughly with your fingertips when shampooing. This will help loosen and remove dead skin flakes and help prevent the infection from continuing. Wash your hair every day until the infection is gone.

Conditioning: Use protective hair conditions on the ends of the hair only. Avoid using conditioner on the scalp, which can clog pores and interfere with skin healing.

Other treatments:

- Massage: Massaging your scalp several times a day with the pads of your fingers will stimulate the blood supply to the hair follicles and help loosen dead skin flakes.

– Brushing: Brushing hair thoroughly every day will help loosen and remove dead skin flakes, promote smooth flow of sebum along the hair shaft, and increase blood supply to hair follicles.

– Wash Hands After Brushing and Grooming Hair: Fungal infections of the skin are highly contagious, and are easy to re-infect and spread to other areas of the body. This is why it’s important to wash your hair daily and brush off loose dandruff flakes — so that healthy areas of the scalp don’t become infected. Washing your hands after brushing, massaging, and grooming your hair will also help prevent re-infection or cross-infection.
