Teachers: Do they really are the unsung heroes?

So, here’s my very first post. I’m in the middle of writer’s block in the making of my paper for my assignment. Therefore, I’m here, writing about things that have completely been stuck in my mind. I’m currently on my third year in one of law school in Indonesia. So, of course, I’ve been through elementary school, junior high and senior high school, here, in Indonesia. One thing I learnt since I was in kindergarten is a simple sentence about teacher, ‘the unsung hero’. That is probably a thing tainted until now. As I get older and older, I began to question whether is it really true or not. I mean, I do agree, some teachers are geniuses human being, helping any kiddos to understand things to make them survive in this cruel big world. Yet, some of them are just being it for some purposes, like money, for sure, and also, lot of days off, perhaps. Well, i’m not really sure though. I don’t really wanna say what do they want when they choose to be a teacher, since I’m not sure either. Law school has thaught me not to be assumtive (although, sometimes, I do say stupid things that are assumtive and do not make any sense lol, but now is not the right time, here, cause I probably gonna get sued if I say wrong things without any evidences). Let me tell you what led me to this kind of question. Back then, when I was in high school, I was often wondering, why do they (the teachers- not all of them, of course) often leave classes without any information, and when we asked to another teachers, they told us that he/she can’t made it because they were attending some workshops, etc. So, I thought, it was something really important that they couldn’t leave whatsoever. But then again, I found out that it wasn’t only once. There will be any other reasons, any other explanations for not coming to classes. Whenever the teachers weren’t coming to classes, of course we do feel fine, since we don’t have to study, sit for hours, and try to focus on those boring math, science, bahasa, english, japanese, etc. But, again, as I get older and older, I realize that it was not good, it was not even fine. It was wrong. All those things happened back then was totally wrong, yet no one tell it was wrong and stand to change it. I am not saying that every teachers here in Indonesia are as destructive as those I’ve mentioned above. I mean, those things weren’t happening to all of my teachers in high school, as well (just some of the teachers). Since I’m no longer in high school, I’ve asked my brother once, whether his teachers doing the same bad things as I’ve mentioned above or not. (FYI, we are going to different high school, but still, in the same country, of course) The answer is not surprizing at all. “Yes, they love to come late to classes, even worse, sometimes, they don’t come at all, but of course I don’t mind, I can always play poker instead,” said a lovely (yet so stupid for saying that) brother of mine. My point is, this have to stop now. Teachers do exist to teach people, to tell what is wrong and what is right, to share knowledge to others, to bring lights into the darkest place. At least, that was the first thing coming accross my mind whenever someone says “Teacher”. Nowadays, I don’t really think, the unsung heroes fit them well. Of course, it still fits into ‘the real’ teachers who teach people wholeheartedly. Those, who share knowledge to other. Those, who tell what is wrong and what is right, and show it with their own actions. Those, who bring lights into the worse darkest place. Lol. I still find it’s funny how I differ teachers with ‘the real one’ and what? not the real one? Does it (not the real teacher) really exist? Well, actually, does the real teacher really exist? Are they really still existed?

This post is not meant to mock any teachers out there. I wanna say thank you very much, instead. Thank you for the knowledge, thank you for all those boring (yet useful) math, thank you for telling me to pursue my dream. By writing this, I’m hoping the best for all teachers everywhere. I do believe, teacher is a real noble proffession anyway. I write this so that would be someone, that hopefully think the same way as I do. I write this, hoping there would be better education provided for anyone out there, for every body. I write this because I believe, there is something here that should be changed by someone, by anyone. If that’s too much, at least, let me just hoping that all of you would know how important education is. And for all the teachers out there, please, keep going on with your job, work hard, nah, work even harder, so that everyone can get better future. After all, you can determine someone to get it. Do prove the world that you always deserve that ‘unsung hero’ as a cold-calling.

Sincerely,

A student then, a student now, a student later.
