Many people do not know where the name “Köln” came from, and i am here to clear that out for you.
Köln is derived from the Latin name “Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium.” This Latin name was given to the city by the Romans when they established a settlement there around 50 AD. The term “Colonia” referred to a Roman settlement or colony, while “Claudia” honored the Roman Emperor Claudius, and “Ara Agrippinensium” referenced the local tribe, the Agrippinenses, and their shrine to the Celtic goddess Ara.
So, after understanding the origin of its name, join me and let us embark on a journey through the heart of this dynamic city through some photographs i had taken on my first ever visit to Köln:
