Part One: “This Pinterest Aesthetic Says This About You.”

DOWNTOWN GIRLS.

You created your life based on what the city was trying to offer you. Graffiti buildings, record stores, and subways are part of your daily routine. A large caramel macchiato with cinnamon on top has consumed you more than water. The heavy jewelry you wear around your neck blends with your leather jackets, band T-shirts, and mom jeans. You’ve got rings on your finger that numb the circulation. There’s no resistance due to how cool it makes you look. Headphones hanging around your $20 tote bag that has nothing inside of it but lip gloss, a wallet, Joan Didion books, hair clips, and a lighter. Oh, how do you manage the simplistic style of city life in the moodiest way possible?

OCTOBER GIRLS.

We’ve been embraced with, “Do you listen to the girl in red?” How about with “Have you watched Gilmore Girls?” And if that answer is yes, you are an October girl. Pumpkin drinks, pumpkin treats, and candles that reek of harvest time and pumpkin spice are your attractions. Autumn is your biggest comfort.

The colored leaves, crisp winds, and moisture in the air don’t make you feel uncomfortable, but make you crave more. Orange decorations cover the town, and your friends record you with their camcorders while you frolic in parks, jump in orange puddles, visit nearby bakeries, and pumpkin patches with numerous cheering children running around, surrounded by orange circles with multiple facial expressions and haystacks laid across the fields. October is your expression of freedom in use; there is just no care in the world.

At night, you can’t help but watch all the Disney Halloween movies from your childhood. Cotton sweaters, vintage wool skirts, and converse powered over your Jean shorts, flip-flops, and tank tops that once had you thrilled. Anxiety over darker days and stress over your university studies drift away so quickly with the sight and feeling of a wholesome season.

DARK ACADEMIA.

Gothic literature lover much? “The Secret History ‘’ by Donna Tartt is placed on your bookshelf in a special place that only you are aware of. Layering your average white button-up shirt with your dark black sweater vest is more of your go-to (don’t forget the plaid pants and a brown trench coat). You’ve got oval-shaped glasses, real or not. Leather-toe shoes cling heavily to your feet.

You spent five hours trapping yourself in libraries, designed for their readers, who can feel at home with their dim-lit chandeliers and skyscraper-sized bookshelves, almost replicating Oxford’s prestigious attire. It makes you wish you were at Oxford. Atmospheric rain is the weather you yearn for every single day. You want to feel the coldness of the wet air on your breath traveling to your lungs. Your local shop is full of random ‘doo-dads’ from the mid-19th century. I stored quill pens with ink and rag paper all over your bedroom. At midnight, candles are lit and Beethoven is blaring from your television as you journal about realism.

However, this doesn’t mean escapism doesn’t cater to your strongest desires as a writer as you’ve written unfearfully about the imagery of you and your past lover trampling through buildings and screaming your heads off as if you are both young forever, and in love forever.

SLICE OF LIFE.

I make these Pinterest collages. However, I am not the one responsible for taking the photos.

Realism is not your biggest weakness. In fact, your personality is the closure behind realistic life events, obstacles, and opportunities. 8 AM, you chow down avocado toast. By 11 AM, you were biking to the nearest Starbucks. You have the same typical order that has never changed for years: mocha latte unless the mood is low-spirited, and enjoying sweetness forces you to get a Venti plain black coffee out of guilt.

As an individual, sitting in a still coffeeshop with various amounts of orders being shouted from behind the counter and jazz music that sounds too identical to each other ruins your ideas of trying to look sophisticated as you’re surrounded by those who clearly couldn't care less about your intention. They’ve got their AirPods in to tune out their surroundings, with frowns on their faces glaring down at their laptops. At 2:30 PM, you and your friends have a picnic by the river. The rest of the day is spent with nothing that pushes you to see everything as uninteresting. You don’t find life thrilling, but you don’t find it unsatisfying either.

The patterns of each day have become welcoming to a lifestyle that makes you grateful for yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
