If you don’t qualify for caregiver permanent residency, you could be eligible to work transiently.

Request a work permit extension

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program may allow you to extend your work visa if you are presently employed as a caregiver in Canada (TFWP).

Prior to hiring you, your business must get a favorable Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

Obtain a new work permit.

Eligibility

If one of these applies to you, you may often apply for a work permit through the TFWP to work temporarily in Canada as a caregiver:

You may apply for a work visa from within Canada since you are there.

You reside outside of Canada, and before June 18, 2019, your employer submitted an LMIA application.

You will be employed in Quebec.

In the following scenarios, you cannot apply for a new work permit (which requires an LMIA):

  1. You are requesting a work permit from outside Canada through the TFWP and intend to work in a province or territory other than Quebec. Your employer filed an LMIA on or after June 18, 2019, and you are doing so.
  2. On or after April 22, 2022, you submit a work permit application at a port of entry.
  3. You are a guest in Canada and must submit your first work permit application on or after April 22, 2022.

How to use

First, your employer must receive a favorable LMIA. You can submit a work permit application when they receive a favorable LMIA.
