In the first four pages of the book Coates tells how America has so much racism in it. But racism was born from labeling people. He says that people label each other and differentiate each other based on skin color and hair type. Back then, he explains how “white people” would not label themselves as white, but as a religion or the region from where they come from. There is no such thing as race, because we are the human race. These labels and definitions include everyone, people are either labeled “white” or “colored people”. n a way everyone is harmed by these label because no one likes to be called “that colored girl” or “that white guy”. My understanding of these concepts has grown, I now understand where racism has come from and how it actually started, by labeling each other by our skin and hair.
