Are you living for the weekend? Do you keep thinking about your next vacation when you’re already on one? Don’t worry because you’re not the only one! A recent study showed that more than half the employees in the United States of America do not have a healthy work-life balance. Well, if that’s the case in the United States of America, where the traffic is well-controlled and the employees have flexibility, we all know that the balance is completely unacceptable in India considering the situation. Although people’s awareness of having a healthy lifestyle is increasing, they don’t have the freedom from stress yet. No matter how hard we try, somehow, we always end up putting off getting a membership at the gym, spending time with family and friends and of course, eating healthy.

Here are 5 tips on how you can create and maintain the right work-health balance.

1. Home-cooked food is a blessing

As they say, “Great bodies are made in the kitchen!”, “You are what you eat!” Some people don’t see any results in spite of an intense workout session every day, eating out healthy by ordering balanced meals and having only a cheat day while others still remain in good shape with a moderate workout session and eating healthy at home. When you eat out you aren’t aware of the kind and amount of preservatives and other substances, they use to improve the taste even if you order a salad. Instead, when you cook at home, you can customize your meal accordingly and never miss out on eating what you love.

2. Exercise every day

Waking up at 5 am running to the gym and then pushing yourself to work or school sounds like such a drag isn’t it? Well, as much as it seems like a drag, exercising regularly not only keeps you physically fit but also mentally fit. Exercising regularly or meditating helps you channelize your energy and reduce anxiety and anger. You don’t necessarily have to go to an expensive gym and sweat a bucket to stay healthy! You can always practice yoga, play a sport you’ve always loved like badminton, tennis, swimming or any sport that involves complete body movement. Any form of exercise 20 minutes a day can keep your mind and body fit!

3. Connect with your friends and family

No matter how long it’s been or what’s going on in your life, your family and friends will always be there for you. Spending 10 minutes each day can help you overcome the stress from all the rants and whines you’ve been through at work. It doesn’t always have to be drinking. Go out for a paintball session with your friends on a weekend and that holiday with your family once a while you’ve been pushing off yet saving up for a long time now. Make it a mantra to not bring home your work that comes along with all the frustrations, stress and anxiety. As long as you’re with them make sure you are with them completely. Stop zoning out or swiping through your social network while you’re spending time with your loved ones.

4. Set aside time to do what you love

Some people may have chosen their jobs or have no choice but to do it for a livelihood. Either way, stress is inevitable. As much as it is important to spend time with your loved ones, it is also important for you to spend some quality time with yourself. Taking yourself out for a coffee to write a poem, gardening, art yoga, painting or taking that long due solo trip or incrementally planning the startup you have always wanted to establish. Devote the time you’ve set aside once a week doing what you love or working on your passion drive. This helps you to rewind and relax and stay calm being productive at the same time.

5. Keep a tab on your Social media

Everybody’s life on social media indeed looks happy, motivated and perfect. Unfortunately, reality isn’t the same. You never know what your Instagram or Facebook group is going through behind those happy photos. So, don’t let those filters, captions and those hashtags deceive you and get to you. Keep a social media filter and don’t overspend your time on social media overthinking. Stop looking at it while you’re at work, spending time with friends and family or even with yourself. Go for a social media detox or reduce your screen time and ensure it’s at a bare minimum and develop new hobbies like reading a book or gardening instead.
