I am rather newish to Instagram myself, so it’s disappointing to have it change already. I already have enough issues with Facebook’s algorithm…I see my friends’ posts nearly a day late, or not at all. Long before the “top stories” crap kicked in, I had already sorted my close friends into FB’s smart list, and have my relatives marked as such. And it did work in the beginning, but now even those people’s posts I see many hours late and only because other mutual friends have been liking/commenting.
I prefer to scroll through everything on Instagram, from the photojournalists to friends who post photos of their lunch. I don’t like or comment on everything any particular person posts, but I don’t want them to drop out of my feed because maybe something they post 2 weeks later will be very important to me. There’s no real way for Instagram to know who my “best friend posting a photo of her new puppy” is. And it will be harder for me to know what the last photo I viewed on the feed was as the order will probably keep shifting.
Now only Flickr is still purely chronological. DIGRESSION: I find that I know more “regular people” who are great photographers on Flickr (although many dropped out through multiple revisions on the site) compared to Instagram, but I love that I can follow famous photojournalists on Instagram. Meanwhile, there’s a lot of people who are Instagram-famous but curiously are neither good photographers nor hot girls taking selfies. It’s a mystery. But I don’t want those Instagram-famous people to be prioritized on my feed over my real friends.
