How to cut and thread conduits?

Cutting and threading conduit needn’t be difficult. Flex It supply a range of retractable cables, PVC flexible conduits and flexible steel conduits, all of which can be tailored to suit your needs specifically.

There are a number of tools that you’ll need in order to cut and thread conduits, these include the following; vice, collets, pencil, electric threader, eye protection, gloves, hacksaw, cutting lubricant and a tape measure.

The process of cutting the conduit is as follows:

1. Mark on any changes you want to make.

For this, you’ll need a pencil or marker. Using a tape measure, mark on the conduit the length that you require, making sure you do this all the way around the conduit.

2. Use collets to protect the conduit.

Place the collets around the conduit leaving room for cutting. The collets are used to prevent corrosion and abrasion, so this step is highlyimportant.

3. Tighten up the wire.

Using the vice, tighten the conduit so that it’s secure and can no longer turn- offering a secure fit.

4. Be safe.

You’ll need safety glasses and safety gloves for the next step: use a hacksaw to cut through the conduit.

(Make sure that you gently saw the conduit rather than vigorously hacking at it.) You can stop sawing once you’ve almost cut through the conduit!

What’s next?

Once you have done this, you’ll have to take care of the free section you’re left with, however, you’ll need to thread the conduit if you plan to use couplings.

Flex-It’s retractable cables are perfect for meeting customer’s specific needs and wants, however, if need be, the conduit can be threaded. There are several methods of threading, including the ratchet and handle method.

Ratchet Handle method.

For this, whether it’s a PVC flexible conduit or flexible steel conduit, the ratchet and handle method works similar to the cutting method- only the ratchet handle is used to turn the conduit clockwise. It’s recommended you do this 3 to 4 times and then 1 anti-clockwise turn to ensure the thread is clean.
