Such an interesting, provocative and thoughtful piece. Thank you, Gail Pellett. I will read it again and again. As a lifelong world-ish traveler, but also as a person whose homes, on the coast of Maine and in Tuscany, have been invaded by mass tourism, I am torn. I’m tempted to say it’s okay for people like me (isn’t it always?), who take the time to understand culture, languages, cuisines, but keep out the masses who don’t. But that’s an easy judgment. I’ll be thinking about this for a long time — and reading many of the writers you’ve recommended.
