How is this different from our own foster systems? When a child’s parents are put in jail they go to a holding tank. God knows what the holding tanks are like. And, then the children go to foster parents who are many times (not all) in it for the money. There are myriad stories about the abuse suffered in foster homes. Children can end up in those holding tanks and in foster care if their own parents are found to be abusive.
And, then there is the genocide of poverty. Sixteen-year-old girls who are heroin addicts giving birth. Using while pregnant, having the baby who is a low birth weight, not giving the baby the right nourishment because she is high. The child learns to survive…barely. He steals to eat, starts doing petty crime at 12, is in juvenile detention at 13. He has a child of his own at 17. At eighteen he commits a felony. He sells drugs to survive because he dropped out of school at 15. No one cared. We were writing stories about immigration camps and children being separated from their parents.
This child above was killed on a street corner at 20. No one cares. This is another genocide perhaps more real than the one you write about.
