Stunning. Few people have the perspective of being deeply committed to athletics ( cross country/track and alcohol use/abuse, it is a contact sport. I couldn’t help but flip back to the past when one of my sons ( who is now a 20 year long alcoholic) yelled at his Dad, his high school coach, after a cross country race — “you can’t make me do it-fuck this- I’m never running again.” And he didn’t. I will have to read this again.
Being a high achiever in sports — always craving, reaching for the next best moment is a beast. The risk, the high, the game, the lie. And there is the booze just fulfilling its creation — drink me. No blame, no excuse, the booze doesn’t lie.
