Digitimes Research: Foxconn investment in Sharp may hike IGZO penetration

While production for LCD panels on IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) TFT back planes is still relatively small, they offer advantages in making large-size applications with high resolutions and low power consumption. IGZO TFT back planes can also be used to produce OLED panels. As Sharp is a leader in IGZO technology, IGZO penetration can increase if Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) hikes the Japan maker’s IGZO production capacity, according to Digitimes Research.

In comparison with LTPS panels, IGZO ones entail fewer manufacturing procedures and therefor have lower production cost, Digitimes Research indicated. LTPS can be made at 6G or below fabs, making it more suitable for the small- to medium-size segment, while IGZO can be processed at 8G or above fabs. Sharp has produced 85-inch IGZO LCD panels.

To meet demand for high-pixel-count smartphone panels, Sharp has hiked pixel density for smartphone-use IGZO panels to 806ppi and may further hike it to 1,200ppi.

IGZO back planes can be used to produce curved-surface or flexible displays as well as OLED ones. Sharp has run trial IGZO production of 3.4-inch flexible OLED panels and 664ppi OLED ones.
