The craziest part about this is that whatever Slack provides can be replicated in IRC for free, one of the oldest and still in wide use chat protocols. It is still very prevalent among open source organizations and some other organizations that I have come across. IRC used to be as, if not more, addictive.

It is brilliant how Slack has packaged the same functionality and made it accessible to everyone, especially for non developers and has maintained the addictive appeal to it.
