The Tortured Tale of Samil — Part II (…Continued)

Samil had grown bitter with his family for having accepted this boring, simple life. When he was ready to go through the Totem ceremony, instead of visiting the local Shaman who had known him since he was born, Samil left his life behind and disappeared to Paragon City. More than anything he feared being saddled with a Totem he felt was beneath his abilities.

As soon as he arrived, Samil arranged a ceremony with the legendary Shaman Koxa (Pronounced: kōSHə). Koxa had a reputation for guiding Nanotopians to the more desired Totems for Anima racing. The Shaman could feel the angst contained within Samil. Still, having listened to his tale of hardship and travel, Koxa felt empathy for the hulking young man, and agreed to guide him through the ceremony.

As it began, the Shaman instantly felt an energy he had not experienced before. Samil’s desperate desire to bond with an animal of power was too strong. Unwilling to surrender to the natural essence of the experience, the ceremony was over almost as soon as it had started.

Confused and enraged, Samil stood over the Shaman demanding to know what his Totem was. With the composure of a seasoned Shaman, Koxa explained to Samil that he had failed to bond with any Totem at all. Through Samil’s protests the Shaman cautioned him to let go of his anger and envy, and to become in tune with his world. Unwilling to listen, Samil burst from the room, determined to find another way to fulfill his dreams.

As he tried to settle into a life in Paragon City, he once again encountered Shaman Koxa. Feeling for the young man, and wanting to help him, the Shaman arranged work for Samil as a Trailbreaker. Although the work was far from the spotlight, the Trailbreakers were considered among the bravest Nanotopians. They venture out into the wilds of the world to forage the materials needed to craft Anima-Armor and other goods.
