Sunday (8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.)

Location: Rockwood, TN (home)

Over our Thanksgiving break, I found myself dragging my feet when it came to the reading for this class. In my head school was in Washington, D.C. not Rockwood, TN. But once i began reading the assigned text, i found myself becoming very interested in the reading. the question for this week was to answer, “How much of a “trickster figure” is Odysseus (compare our chapter on Hermes)?” to answer this question by giving a few examples of things that Odysseus does on his journey to return home after the Trojan war. in the comparison to Hermes is very similar to what why the reader would compare the two characters to one another. when Odysseus was visiting Cyclops and the cave off one of the islands, Odysseus’s crew of men begged for him to allow them to take some of the plentiful of food that was laying around the well-organized cave. The men weren’t sky when it came to help themselves -uninvited-to all the food they wanted. When the Polyphemus enters his quarters, he was angry to see that these uninvited strangers eating his food. Once Cyclops began eating Odysseus men in return of his food, Odysseus takes this opportunity to out-smart Polyphemus by getting him drunk causing him to fall asleep and then blinds him by stabbing a burning stake through the Cyclops’s eye. After causing painful damage to the Cyclops, Odysseus and his men hide themselves under the wool of the sheep allowing them to escape Polyphemus rage of angry, as he cries out of pain while opening the entrance door for the sheep to leave out.

In the same manner, Hermes tries to pull the wool (no punt-intended) of his brother Apollo’s eye after stealing his cattle. In case one is unfamiliar with the story version of this story, Hermes is the god version of Odysseus when it comes to tricks and mischief of others trust. When Apollo demanded that Hermes tell him were he had hidden his cattle, Hermes a young baby, played to his innocent, saying, “How could a young babe such as I do all that you say?” Yet, Apollo still didn’t believe Hermes at his own word, so Hermes resulted to use something with a more weight behind it, in order to clear his name. He swore an oath on his Father Zeus that he didn’t commit a crime, by stealing Apollo’s cattle. Apollo still not falling for Hermes lie, calls Hermes, “a cunning deceiver and trained thief.” This phrase that Apollo refers to Hermes, is very similar to the phase that Achilles uses to describe Odysseus actions, “I hate that man like the gates of Hades house who conceals on thing in his hear, but say another,” here Achilles is implying that Odysseus is deceitful, and that his eloquence is misleading and his words do not express his honest thoughts and intentions.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a figure in society?

To be a trickster in American society today came be found in many different areas of jobs and professional careers that are of high status, power, money, and prestige. This type of figure came be found in the form of modern women vs. old-school women, 90’s babies vs. 00’s babes, politicians from all sides, and the rich people who embezzlement. It can be viewing the easiest when looking at politicians. When it comes time to for elections (from county, districts, state, and federal) level is when you see the big works. The numbers that the candidate use to represent whatever it is that they are talking or debating about is usually manipulated in the favor of the candidates themselves. Perfect example of politicians being tricksters. Let’s take Donald Trump for example, when he was running for president, he was dragging Hilary Clinton through the mud about the private emails scandal. Oh, he made such a fuss about it that you would have thought the world was coming to an end. He said that she should be thrown in jail and all kinds of stuff. Recently, if you have been watching the news, you would be “shocked” to know that Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump has been all over the news for her own private emails. But what makes Donald Trump related to the same characteristics as Odysseus and Hermes, is the fact that, his daughter didn’t mean do anything wrong, and that she hasn’t committed a crime unlike Hilary Clinton. Donald Trump is “deceitful, and that his eloquence is misleading, and his words do not express his honest thoughts and intentions, “as so.

How does a human life (or a portion of a human life) resemble a quest? How is college life like a quest, for example?

Returning home from break, after my flight being delayed twice and having to be place on a different fight, putting me five hours behind schedule. I decide why not work on some homework, yay!! This question is very interesting, and I am happy that this question was posed. When you look up the definition on google for Quest, the first definition that comes up is “a long or arduous search for something.” That is all that life is, a quest, of the unknown facts; but facts that will help you during your search. When we are born into this world, we struggle to understand the simple things, but as we grown-up and experience life to some degree. Those simple things no longer hold our desires to understand what other/or ourselves have yet to uncover. When you were young, coming up in grade school you would hear people say, “college is where you find yourself, and experience life in a brand-new way.” This is true. College is the struggle version of the quests that most finding out just how rough adulting and figuring things out; is the part of the quest (encountering self-esteem issues, going through depression, death of loved ones etc.) like Odysseus (encountering Cyclops, Sirens, and visiting the Underworld etc.) when he journeyed for years before returning home (the glory of the ending). The glory is of the ending in college is when you conquer your college years and began to transition into the next stage of your quest.

Is it possible to structure one’s life like a quest? What would be the advantages and disadvantages of doing so?

I think that one’s life is already a quest, it all depends on your perspective and how you choose to define quest. It’s hard to have a different outlook on things when you grow-up looking at things from that way that it was defined early on. If you were to ask someone to define the word quest in their own words, you would probably image a fiction movie or a myth that is looks to a quest as being something only for heroes, leaders, or the “chosen one.” The one disadvantage of structuring your own life into a quest, is you trying to create an extreme story to the point that you would miss the experience and lesson you were meant to learn. One advantage would be that you would push yourself to be the best you could be, and to gain kelos in your honor.
