5 Tips to Help Defeat Writer’s Block
Writer’s Block. We’ve all suffered it more than once. Reading slumps, writer’s block, art block. We know it by many names. But, I recently came across some good tips that I want to share with you:
- Eliminate Distractions
I know, I know, this one’s a no-brainer, but, it can be useful. Eliminating distractions doesn’t just mean, putting your phone in another room, it also means, that if you have something on your mind you need to get done that is preventing you from writing, just go and get it done first, then come back to the writing. Or, if you have a drink or some food next to you that you keep stopping your typing for, put those away too.
Another interesting thing you could try is the White Noise feature in the Background Noises on your iPhone, or search up a website for white noise on another phone and go from there. White Noise has been proven to help people, especially people with ADHD, get into hyperfocus.
2. Change Your Medium
If you aren’t getting in the rhythm of typing, change your medium. Write it down on paper, and handwrite it. Hell, even try to draw what you’re trying to write. This is one of the best-kept secrets of defeating Writer’s Block, I know you’re sceptical, but try it out and see how it goes.
3. Bullet Points
Stop trying to write full sentences, write some bullet points, god knows that it’s a lot easier sometimes to just mind-dump instead of having to work out the correct grammar and punctuation
4. Take a Brain Break
Might seem counterintuitive, but it works. Get away from your screen, and go make yourself a cup of tea, or some food. Distract yourself away from the writing by doing an actual task, this does NOT include scrolling on TikTok or Instagram.
5. Work on Skills
When you are stuck on the topic you are supposed to be writing about, work on some writing skills and exercises. Like, look at an object and write a paragraph describing it. Create a 500-word response to a writing prompt. Try writing something different to hone your skills.
Anyways, at least one of these tips for getting over Writer’s Block has to work for you. I’m just starting out writing on Medium, so give me a follow if they do!
