The chair reserved for Ilham Tohti, this year’s Sakharov Prize laureate is empty. Jewher Ilham, his daughter, doesn’t want to be here either. She would rather live in a world where such awards wouldn’t need to exist.
“I have never signed up for this. I hate politics. I hate traveling every week to a different place just to speak on behalf of my father. But Chinese government left me with no choice”, she said at the seminar for journalists.
