Challenges of Working in Virtual Settings

After the invention of the Internet, people started to get connected with each other in virtual space. Before, in order to ask an opinion from somebody, we were supposed to meet with the person in person, if the individual was living in another country we were supposed to pay for the expensive tickets and go discuss the matter. Now, it seems that technology solved most of our issues. But, it seems that besides its advantages there are few challenges as well.
Cultural Differences: Nowadays, we can work with people from different countries without meeting them in person. In some close cultures saying no directly is tough — maybe they do not enjoy direct communication style or simply shy to say no. It may even take few days for them to reject your idea.
Understanding of Time: Every person has its own perception towards time and punctuality. Let’s say if you made an appointment for 5 pm Eastern Time Conference Call. For some people it may sound like 4:45, 5:05 or even 5:30. You will be lucky if you can work with the team who understands 5 pm as 5 pm exactly :)
Likelihood of Miscommunication: While communicating virtually it is much easier to misunderstand the information. However, when you are interacting face-to-face likelihood of this case is diminishing significantly. Therefore, in some crucial meetings companies still choose to fly the team to the specific location.
