Customer journey maps. No doubt you’ve heard of those. Maybe even made one or two. They’ve been around for quite a while now, adorning the walls of offices everywhere.

Born out of hope and enthusiasm at the start of a project. A flurry of “co-creation” and sticky notes. A mosaic of colourful sketches and scribbles.

Goals and needs, hopes and fears, ups and downs, comings and goings.

Clusters form, themes emerge, a narrative develops.

The team stands and admires their work. It’s a sight to behold.

And then…

Maybe somebody takes some snaps of it on their phone. The photos get sent to the team, but nobody really looks at them. That was fun, but it’s time for the real work to start now.

One by one, those sticky notes, ignored and uncared for, come loose and tumble to the floor. The optimism they encapsulated, the hope that this time, this time we would do it right, trampled underfoot, scrunched up and flung in the bin.

Look, we’ve got nothing against sticky notes. They have their place. We Wouldn’t be where we are today without them. Versatile, colourful, user-friendly. But also slow, wasteful, and hard to recycle. And besides, if we’re designing digital services, shouldn’t we be using digital tools?

Enter Narrandum. Because sticky notes are Past-It.

Not just a glorified spreadsheet.

Our goal with Narrandum was to create something more than a digital version of the analogue process described above. We believe that a customer journey map should be the centrepiece of any successful project, not just a teambuilding exercise or a colourful wall decoration.

We wanted to help our customers to understand people and their circumstances, not just describe them. To create a service which inspires as it informs. A tool which is quick, fun, and simple, but also produces beautiful, persuasive results.

Luckily, a framework for this already exists. In fact, it has existed for thousands of years. And you already know how it works, because you’ve been using it all your life.

It’s called a story.

Bring your customers’ stories to life.

And that’s the basis for the entire service. Scenes and characters, events and settings, needs and goals. It’s a bit different, and honestly, a bit weird. It’s probably not for everyone, but we hope it might be for you.

We could describe how Narrandum works in detail here, but if you’ve made it this far, we think your time would be better spent trying it out for yourself. So head on over to narrandum.com and sign up for free.

(Narrandum is still at a very early stage of development, so we would love to have your feedback, good or bad. Send us an email with your thoughts and we’ll give you free premium access for a month)
