For the thesis, I have a clear path on technical interests (medium), as well as arguments (why, the needs). But in these initial phases of the project, I feel (but understand) that my main interest: Inclusive Design, is still quite broad and lacks a focus. I took advantage of this week’s Brainstorming exercise and confront it as an exploratory activity in order to further specify the avenues that I will take with the thesis, and therefore, concentrate the efforts of the research phase and have better results on the observations (including research methods such as interviews, focus groups, etc…) and design insights .

In addition to visiting exhibitions at the Copper Hewitt Museum, which explores Accessibility and the senses as effective tools for Inclusive Design, I used the storyboarding and visual thinking to graphicly illustrate ALL (regardless of means and effects), possible ramifications and avenues that the project could take. To carry out this activity, I had to rely on bibliographical resources, the museum visit, and the observation of relevant projects carried out in the field of inclusive design previously at Parsons, MIT and other resources.

The benefits of Visual thinking are that, in addition to opening the spectrum of possibilities, thoughts are drawn (graphic recording), and therefore, new ideas and new paths are opened.

When you have a visual record (a general map) of the project’s spectrum, you can also identify potential needs that have not been seen and that can alert you to a significant social impact / more and new effects.

Relevant works in this field are for example: the works of artist/designer Gabriele Heinzel, designer Chris Bangle (ex- car designer of BMW), MrDoodle, IDEO. Etc…
