The Biggest Act of Worship There Is

I am always BLOWN AWAY at how God lines things up in our lives! Isn’t it amazing to think that one little conversation 5 months ago was actually God opening doors and preparing me to learn so many new things about Him over these past few months? Things that I didn’t even know I needed to know but now that I know them, I can’t imagine my life without them?

Hello, my name is Natalie and I am just a single, simple country girl trying to figure out and follow God’s plan for my life as I begin my senior year in the Education Department at Lancaster Bible College. Just to fill you in a bit, this past summer has been packed FULL of God. There are so many things that He lined up in my life, people and places He brought me to, and lessons that He taught me throughout the summer, and He used my various experiences (like serving for 5 weeks at summer camp and a mission trip to Guatemala) to accomplish these things.

I’m going to share one of those lessons with you now, so let’s enter into Story Time With Natalie and go back to that conversation I had 5 months ago. I hardly even remember it but my friend that I was talking to does. And that conversation sparked a thought in her 2 months later to buy me a copy of the book she was reading. That book was called ‘Not-Yet-Married’ by Marshall Segal. Remember when I said I was single? Yeah this book was about that. But after reading through all 15 chapters, you might be surprised to learn that the most impactful thing wasn’t about a relationship (or lack of) at all, but it was about God and how He created us with the purpose of worship. That everything we do, every interaction, every friendship, every relationship we are a part of, should be an act of worship. “Worship is the goal of all Christian dating, because worship is the goal of the Christian life.” We should be striving to bring honor and glory to Him, and the only way to do that is to follow the guidelines He has laid out for us when it comes to our relationships, to stand out among a world of unbelieving, disobedient people so that we may point them to Him.

Now jump ahead with me to LBC and my Christian Perspectives class. One of our textbooks is a book called ‘Sex and Money’ by Paul David Tripp and I was a little unsure of what to expect (you know, as a single college student reading a book all about sex and money) but wouldn’t you know it, right there in chapter 2, CONNECTION!! Tripp says “Your worlds of sex and money are worlds of worship…Worship is your identity as a human being. You were designed for worship… So sex is an act of worship in the same way. Your use of money is an act of worship in some way. When you think of worship, don’t just think of a weekend religious activity; think of a lifestyle.” Wow! Do you see the connection there? How God lined that up so that when I finished one book that started the process of changing my mindset to a lifestyle of worship, I was thrown right into another one that continued it! I love it when He does things like that!

Anyway, God has got me thinking about how there are so many parts of our lives that we don’t associate with worship, but we should. If we intentionally thought about all of our relationships as an act of worship, can you imagine how different our relationships would be? We would be seeking to encourage one another instead of tearing each other down. We would be selflessly desiring what is best for the other person instead of always focusing on our own pleasure. We would be using sex the way God designed it instead of how the world tells us to. We would be using the money God has blessed us with to bless others around us. We would be showing the world who God is through our changed relationships, and that is the biggest act of worship there is!

It doesn’t take much for a Christian relationship focused on worship to stand out in this world. Our world is so full of lost people who worship themselves. People who need the Lord. All you have to do is read the newspaper headlines to hear about the latest sex scandal or money fraud. Recently, the Lancaster Newspaper has been covering the story of the former CEO of Worley and Obetz and how he embezzled over $1 million. https://lancasteronline.com/news/local/worley-obetz-s-former-ceo-controller-charged-with-using-company/article_1c72ff4e-aa20-11e8-bb86-9702d32b2a2e.html

Problems like this aren’t going to be resolved without people changing their lives. And their lives won’t be changed unless they learn who God is. And guess what? We can show them!

By intentionally striving to worship God through our relationships, we will be showing Him to the world! Now think back to my story of how God lined up that conversation I had 5 months ago to teach me this lesson now. Maybe God is lining something up for your best friend, or that person you talk to in the hallway tomorrow, and you treating that interaction as an act of worship will be the start of something for them. Just think, in every relationship and every interaction, “a worshiper is who you are; worship is what you do.”

I’m just a girl constantly seeking and always amazed to discover the things that God lines up in my life.
