BLAST FROM THE PAST (1999)
Not too long I watched a famous film called “Blast from the past”.
Dr. Calvin Webber, a strange, eccentric and famous in Los Angeles scientist thought that The Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union is imminent. He has built a large, fully functional fallout shelter under his house in secret of everyone. After the fall of the radioactive bomb on his house, he decided that it’s time to hide with his pregnant wife in the shelter. It wasn’t the bomb, but the bomb shelter was closed for 35 years. It was a replica of their real house. There was a lot of food and water in the shelter. Shortly after their son was born and the young parents named him “Adam”. For 35 years, Adam has raised on Jackie Gleason re-runs, Perry Como records, and dreams about life on the surface. While his father taught him about science, baseball and avoiding Communists, his mother taught him about dancing, manners and charming girls. Meanwhile, he waited and waited for a chance to see the sky.
When the locks open in 1997, Calvin is so shocked to see how the world has changed, so he decides the family must stay underground. But Adam got a chance to see the sky, so he went outside. He met a real girl, named Eve. She couldn’t believe his perfect manners, his strange clothes, his lapses of current knowledge or his taste in music. She helped him to settle into a new world and society. By the way, Adam asked Eva to help to find him a wife. Adam told Eve about himself and his life, so the next morning when Adam came to Eve’s place, she was waiting for him with a mental health professional named Dr. Nina Aron and her assistant to have him committed. In the beginning, he agreed but then he ran away and asked Eve to collect his things for him and pay his hotel bill. Eve found some things like toiletries and clothing manufactured in the early 1960s and his valuable stocks in companies like IBM, and deduce that Adam is not crazy and had said the truth.
Eventually, as is the custom in such movies, they fall in love.
At the end of the movie, Adam built the house which looked exactly the same as the shelter inside for Adam’s parents.
Finally, I really liked this light, romantic and sometimes funny film. My favorite characters are Helen, Dr. Webber’s wife, and Eve because Helen is the image of his wife, which should be equal to many women, and Eve — she is a very sincere girl, I think. She fell in love with Adam even though she thought he was weird.
However, I think I don’t understand the main idea of this movie.
And the last thing that I’d like to tell you some information about The Cold war: The Cold War began not too long after World War II ended in 1945. Although, the Soviet Union was an important member of the Allied Powers, there was great distrust between the Soviet Union and the rest of the Allies. The Allies were concerned with the brutal leadership of Joseph Stalin as well as the spread of communism. The Cold War came to an end with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Why was it called the Cold War? The Cold War was so called because of the icy relationship between the USSR and USA starting at the end of WW2, because two great powers never directly fought each other it was called a “cold war”, meaning there was no physical fighting.
