Federal Parliament of Somalia passes national media law

Parliament speaker, Mohamed Osman Jawari, urged journalists to serve
their nation and avoid anything could ignite violence and conflict in
the country. ‘You journalists, you should take part in rebuilding your
country, not the destruction, you have the microphones and pens to
serve your people and increase community awareness, leave minor issues
that are not necessary,’ he added.” — The Somali National News Agency

Journalists in Somalia, which also gets lots of British and U.S. aid, face daily threats both from Islamist militants and from a government determined to stop them writing about those militants.

“Police raids, closures and trials on absurd charges are the preferred methods for gagging journalists and news outlets,” says campaign group Reporters Without Borders.
