Kelli — thanks for posting. I adopted a rescue pup a few years ago and also decided to return the dog. It was a heartbreaking decision — but it became clear (especially after meeting with a dog trainer) that all the things I loved to do with my dog (travel, be outside, go to the office) stressed the dog out (bringing out strong protective & nippy behaviors). Yes, with training I could have nurtured the dog into being more comfortable — but ultimately it wasn’t going to be truly happy. I returned the 2 year old dog and she was adopted by an elderly lady who had all the behaviors to make the dog content! It really identified for me how much the matching process for pet adoption is about finding a lifestyle match for both the dog and owner, which I do think rescue agencies could focus on a bit more to secure better long term matches.
Goodbye, Rescue Dogs
