Two people sent me the same video within the past 24 hours: Rapping, deconstructed. It’s well-done and easily accessible for those who don’t know much about hip hop — it defines what ‘beats’ and ‘bars’ are.

My favorite part about hip hop is lyricism. The video goes into detail about songs from OGs like Biggie and Black Star. I like the idea of picking a piece of music and analyzing it. I like it so much that I would love to do nothing other than write a blog post on some lyrics every week. So I may start doing that and calling it “Check the Rhime,” as per the Tribe Called Quest song of that title.

But what I like the most about this video is that it shows that hip hop is a text, like any other novel or play or speech. I hate it when people think rap music is somehow not art. Videos like this are a great way to stop that mentality. Thanks for the great video, Vox!
