Dear Data Post #2: Travelling

Week 2 comes around quick — it pretty much sneaked up on me, with a crazy jam packed week of summer activities.

This week’s theme, ironically, touches close to home for me — Travelling. The very essence of my life so far; leaving Home to discover more of the world, places I dreamt of as a child, a little escape in recent years.

My visualization this week shows us miles travelled in 5 year-increments. If any one of my friends saw this, they could likely explain the changes in miles travelled, especially in the last 10 years. I’ll be interested to see what Andriy Nemchenko thought when he first saw this.

My Travelling visual for Andriy

2011–2015 was an interesting period, though one wouldn’t be able to tell what was going on in my life just by looking at the chart. I moved cities, travelled a bunch after graduation, switched jobs, you name it. You could, however, see that in the orange “X”es for that time frame, I travelled through the Silk Road in China, went to Alaska, Barbados, South East Asia, Japan. Pretty much as much as my bank account would allow for without yelling too much in pain.

Andriy’s Travelling visual

Andriy took a slightly different approach here with a from-to visual and a frequency legend, which probably told the story of his travelling history a little better.

And here it is. Watch out for next week’s series :)
