Things to consider before you clock out, permanently.

Entrepreneurship is alluring.

It is a divine solution to the ultimate workplace conflict- the tension between management and their employees. Who hasn’t fantasized about walking up to their manager and reciting something rehearsed and clever- riddled with expletives- before storming out while their peers watch in awe?

In my favorite movies, a brave martyr starts a company of her own five minutes after submitting her resignation.

Later that night, she manages to find legitimate funding on some seedy website offering start-up grants to “women with ideas”. Then in one swift gesture of privilege and selflessness, she offers board seats and six-figure salaries to her best gal pals.

The difference between that plot and reality is…absolutely everything.

Here are a few things to think about before you tell your boss to go to hell.

  1. Many people assume that entrepreneurship is freedom, by default. It isn’t. Working for yourself usually means working by yourself. There is no one else to blame, delegate to, or bounce ideas off of unless you have a sentimental cat.
