Is Cosmetic Surgery The Demon We Think It Is?

Now my facebook is geared up to receive a variety of news updates from Yahoo, ranging from celebrity gossip to breaking news. Most of the time I disregard a lot of it but there are some topics that pluck a heart string.

Cosmetic surgery is a strange topic today as some people are arrogantly against it and some people are desperately for it. But the question is…can we find a middle ground?

I understand the stigma around cosmetic surgery as we should love ourselves for who we are and should not wish to change our image because of societies ‘perfect image’, but we completely accept cosmetic surgery for those with deformities, so where do we draw the line?

We are all aware of the extremist that are out there. Individuals desperate to look like Barbie or Ken, or desperate to be a celebrities doppelganger. So before I go any further, let’s write them off. Nothing can be done to justify their obsessions or validate them, nor are they my concern.

I believe the general populous accepts cosmetic surgery for those with severe deformities but how do they respond to surgery for a fairly normal child?

By the time I turned 9, I was bullied on a regular basis for my looks. Now I wasn’t deformed, I didn’t have some grotesque growth or anything and I wasn’t weird, at least not as weird as some, yet I was the target.

I can understand some would say ‘a child, that’s outrageous!’ but is it really? I had my ears pinned back, a simple enough procedure and one that made a lot of difference to my life. I totally agree that we should love ourselves for who we are and I think extreme surgery is ridiculous but something that changes how we are treated by others can be something entirely different.

Now I’m totally contradicting myself and being inconclusive because the debate is ‘Is Cosmetic Surgery The Demon We Think It Is?’ and I’m really asking…is it?
