The amusing part to me is that Starbucks’ entire line of roasts seems to be shifted darker. The “light” roasts are equivalent to the medium roasts I prefer from higher quality roasters like Stumptown. I find Starbucks’ Veranda blend to at least be drinkable, particularly if it’s a pour-over, though I don’t enjoy light roasts in general.
I’ve heard many of these theories about Starbucks and dark roasts. But I also see similar dark roasts at Umbria in Seattle, which is a smaller Italian-influenced roaster. “Italian roast” is also generally darker. So I wonder how much of it comes from the Italian espresso tradition.
