Dear Mormon Man, tell me what you would do.

This story really puts into perspective the problems with a gender exclusive priesthood and those that concept leaves behind and discriminates against.

The privileged usually find it hard to see from the perspective of those who are disadvantaged by gender, race, class etc. This is especially true of patriarchal religions like Mormonism, and more so of those churches whose discrimination and prejudices are ingrained in their doctrines.

As someone who tried for decades to reconcile the lack of equality women have in Mormonism with my personal faith in that religion, who had daughters he feared would see themselves as less valued because of such beliefs, I ultimately found I couldn’t reconcile the God of Mormonism with fairness, justice, logic and science.

As I’ve pointed out elsewhere -

LDS Women Don’t Get:

Any say on decisions made regarding them.
Any female voice to speak on their behalf for the church.
Equally treated in church disciplinary courts.
The chance to have private worthiness interviews with a woman.
Equally financed young women’s programs.
Any say on their Relief Society manuals.
A chance to go to heaven without a man.

This is not equivalent or equitable roles or treatment. There is nothing equal about it. All of it just reinforces that in Mormonism women are less than men.
