#MTPTrain Day One — New Milestones and Kindred Spirits

It felt like freshman week of undergrad all over again. As I walked into the lobby of The Line Hotel to the reception desk to check into my room, I felt small and super vulnerable. But in a great way. All I could think was the moment I had been preparing for the last few months had finally arrived. I had no more time to think, I had to get moving.
When I walked into the plush room with orange and cream decor, I noticed the pricy merchandise, including $20 condoms, which were all way of out of league. I laughed but appreciated the opportunity to experience these cool accommodations. My roommate Laura, a Fulbright scholar and an amazing, smart and funny woman from Mexico who is currently studying in Illinois, had not arrived yet.
By 1:30, Savoyia, my 20th interviewee for my series “The Questions 100” met me at the hotel. I had hit a new milestone and our conversation went well. After wrapping up, I had enough time to grab some Korean wings, call my mom (who didn’t answer) and to head back to post my prelude blog.
Around, 4 PM, I met Laura and we cliqued immediately. Around 5, we gathered with the rest of the participants in the lobby to walk to the Normandie hotel where we had our oreintation.
The first meeting let me know I was in the right place at the right time in my life. The Millennial Train Project founder Patrick ran down our values that we would follow on the trip and we began to engage in some thought provoking questions. Within two hours, I knew that these people were super super in tune with themselves as well as others. I had found some kindred spirits.
Although many of us here are coming from all over the states and abroad, from different backgrounds, we have found a safe meeting space for our ideas and where can be ourselves in this alternative reality for the next 8 days.
We then climbed the stairs to the rooftop of the hotel where we were welcomed by an amazing view of the city. As a nearsighted person who left her glasses at home, I realized that I was losing by not having them.
After formal introductions and dinner from an amazing burger place called Casell’s, we went back to The Line Hotel where we toasted to the trip ahead.
The conversations I had today were life giving and I’m excited to learn more about the people around me.
Patrick said one of our focuses this week is to take part in productive discomfort and I know that those growing pains will be valuable to us as the week goes on.
